This piece explores the mesmerizing beauty of oysters. Through vibrant color and thoughtful composition, contrasting oyster shells float against a fluid, water-like background, deliberately set outside their traditional context. The piece invites viewers to explore the oyster’s natural beauty, highlighting its delicate textures and hard shell forms in an unexpected, abstract yet pleasing setting.
On the Maine coast, oysters are vital to our coves and harbors. As filter feeders, they act as nature's purifiers, tirelessly cleaning the water and improving its quality. In my painting, I seek to honor this vital role by portraying the oysters as guardians of the sea, silently working to preserve the delicate balance of marine life.
The Process
Ying-Yang is a constant play between dichotomy - cool and warm tones, rough marks and buttery golden strokes, and the application of transparent and opaque oils. At the heart is a duo of golden ratios, guiding the eyes through a circular tugging of proportions in the composition.

I’m partial to Mere Point because of its locality and their ongoing efforts in community involvement and education. You can visit their farm on a charming boat tour during the summer or support them at your local farmer’s market, as I do.

This is a brilliant idea! The oyster movement now has its own "trail." Grab a passport and explore oysters all along our coastline. Think of it as a destination similar to a wine region or a string of microbreweries—but even better.

While you can find oysters in nearly any town, I love the simplicity of Freeport Oyster Bar, tucked on Maine Street. Grab a barstool, try something new, and if you’re lucky, enjoy some live local music, too.
