Why "Sea the Future"?
When handed a four-foot, double-sided PVC "canvas" to be displayed alongside works from two dozen Maine artists, I knew I had to stay true to myself and capture my version of the essence of Freeport.
For me, this meant embracing my painterly style and reflecting on our precious and precarious environment: our waterways and the treasures they hold. Rather than focusing solely on lobsters, I expanded the theme to include aquaculture including seaweed and kelp. It’s our delicate ecosystems that are impacted by humans yet rely on us for preservation that make me excited to learn more, and to do more.
The name of my boat, "Sea the Future," is a playful twist, and the back of the boat honors Rachel Carson, a symbol of environmental advocacy. This piece invites reflection on the increasing community collaboration and responsibility for the waters and the life within them.
The Process
The boats are designed to be showcased outdoors—in gardens, on decks, or patios—transforming these spaces into sources of daily joy for auction winners. I want the new owner to feel a sense of enchantment, perhaps even mesmerized, each time they encounter Sea the Future.
To achieve this, I focused on creating a visual experience that feels organic and painterly — very me — avoiding a graphic or cartoonish style. Working with this unique medium was a challenge, but embracing metallic colors was a pivotal decision to execute my vision. The result is a surface that comes alive in changing light, inviting admiration in person and rewarding those who take the time to observe its subtle, shimmering transformation.
